Dewatering from the subduction zone causes formation of serpentine in the lithopheric mantle of the upper plate and melts in the hot asthenospheric wedge at greater depths.
The most violent volcanism occurs directly be- hind the magmatic front where the large amount of water derived from the subduction zone enters into the asthenospheric wedge.
The downward mo- tion of the subduction zone induces a downward current in the asthenospheric wedge above.
In this manner, the asthenospheric wedge is con- tinuously supplied with new, hot mantle material.
